Dating in College

There is a large percentage of people that choose their life partner while they are in college.  Finding our romantic partner is one of the most important situations we're involved in in life. How is this selection accomplished?  For many this mate selection process is fueled by the Romantic Myth of finding "the One" person who is  described in the various forms of media, i.e. music, movies, and romance novels.   Other influences include family of origin issues,  peer relationships, as well as cultural values at large.

This seminar will focus on the subject of romantic partnerships from the perspective of Evolutionary Psychology.  This perspective asserts that sexual selection is a functional behavior that results in solutions to evolutionary problems on the more psychological level, for example, the development of language, cooperation, inferring other's emotions, etc.  We will also look at recent survey research on romantic partnerships as well as brain/behavior research.

The goal of this seminar is to provide  college-age participants with an alternative perspective to mate selection than the Romantic Myth provided by the mainstream culture.   The hope is that the participants will leave with increased curiosity to learn more about mate selection and to be able to make more informed choices for themselves.
